Position Summary

The Medical Dosimetrist is responsible for administering radiation dose distributions and making dose calculations used in radiation therapy.

 

In July, Orlando Health Cancer Institute will be opening our newest center in St Petersburg, Florida.  This center will have a Varian TrueBeam, a Siemens CT, and a Bravos HDR unit.  The prospective dosimetry candidate will be joining a team of 11 dosimetrists and 11 physicists working across 6 centers in central Florida.  Treatment planning is performed using Full-Scale Eclipse/Aria deployed though Citrix.  We work in a hybrid environment with 3 days on-site and 2 days remote.  The candidate would have their option of working on-site at the St Petersburg facility or at our main center in Downtown Orlando based on their preference.

Qualifications

Education/Training
A graduate of an approved affiliated university or approved affiliated hospital medical dosimetry program with clinical and
classroom curriculum of twelve months or longer.
OR
A registered radiation therapist with on the job training in dosimetry of twelve months under the supervision of a certified medical
dosimetrist, medical physicists or radiation oncologist and an additional one year of practical, supervised experience in medical
dosimetry.
OR
A Bachelor’s degree in physical sciences with on the job training in dosimetry of twelve months under the supervision of a certified
medical dosimetrist, medical physicist or radiation oncologist and an additional one year of practical, supervised experience in
medical dosimetry.

 

Licensure/Certification
Eligible for certification by the Medical Dosimetry Certification Board. Renewed every five years.

 

Experience
Dosimetry School -- one year of school plus one year of clinical experience.
Bachelor’s degree in a physical science -- one year of on the job training and one year additional clinical
Experience.
Registered radiation therapist -- one year of on the job training and one year additional clinical experience.

Responsibilities

Administrative:
• Assists in the development and implementation of operating procedures for the safe use of all ionizing radiation producing
equipment in the department.
• Responsible for the monthly statistical analysis of all treatments and their accuracy and recommendations for improving and/or
changing procedures where necessary.
• Assists the medical physicists in designing and delivering the in-house training for all staff members working with or around any form
of ionizing radiation.
• Participates in formulating policies and procedures for the department as pertaining to medical dosimetry procedures, including the
safe use of radioactive materials and ionizing radiation producing equipment in compliance with state of Florida, Department of
Health, rules and regulations.
• Responsible for the quality assurance checks on the treatment planning computers used in dosimetry, used to calculate and display
individual patient treatment schemes and for collating and analyzing the data.
• Assists generally in the overall maintenance and implementation of charge capture system for all aspects of radiation therapy
treatments, simulations and dose calculations and checking.
Consultative:
• Works with radiation oncologists on individual patient treatments using all of the treatment modalities available in the department.
• Discusses patient diagnoses with the radiation oncologists to determine how to best accomplish the goals of treatment for each
individual patient and be capable of relaying this information to dosimetrists, treatment and simulation therapists and others who
may be directly involved in the actual treatment.
• Provides guidance and/or assistance to the radiation therapists in all simulation procedures required to obtain the necessary data to
produce plans for the prescribed treatments.
• Provides guidance and/or assistance to the radiation therapist in all treatments to ensure proper and accurate deliverance of
treatments as planned.
• Works with the medical physicist in developing and implementing operating procedures for the safe use of all treatment machines
and radioactive materials used to treat patients.
• Works with the medical physicists in developing and maintaining a quality assurance program for accurate beam alignment in patient
set-ups, monitor unit/time settings, laser alignments, dose calculations, isodose distributions and treatment planning computer
accuracy.
• Assists in the development and implementation of new treatment techniques such as LDR, HDR, stereotactic radiosurgery, IMRT,
IORT, TBI, and tomotherapy.
Treatment Planning:
• Coordinates treatment simulations and tumor localization on dedicated devices, including CT and MRI when indicated for treatment
planning.
• Designs treatment techniques by means of computer and/or manual computations that will deliver the radiation dose prescribed by
the radiation oncologists.
• Performs dose calculations to deliver the prescribed dose and independently verify the mathematical accuracy of all calculations.
• Completes the patient treatment record with the specific details of the treatment and document same in the patient’s treatment
chart either on a treatment sheet or in a record and verify computer or both.
• Assists in the planning and production of any beam modifying devices including multileaf collimator, custom blocks, compensating
filters, custom focused blocks, wedges, brachytherapy molds, custom bolus and immobilization devices including but not limited to
casts, aquaplast masks and alpha cradles.
• Performs any special calculations or measurements such as spinal cord doses, abutting field gaps, SSD changes and electron block
calibrations.
